Sepsis not Present on Admission with a Major Procedure Cohort
The Sepsis Not Present on Admission with a Major Procedure Cohort includes all encounters with any diagnosis code for sepsis or septic shock not present on admission (POA). In addition, there must also be at least one procedure with an HCUP Procedure Class of 3 or 4.
To leverage this cohort:
- Profile filters: In the Profile Editor, add the cohort as a profile filter. With this option, you can further customize the profile with additional filters.
- Statistical Process Control: Because sepsis populations are not homogenous, this cohort is not available in this section.

The encounter must also have at least one procedure with an HCUP Procedure Class of 3 or 4, coded in any position.
Cohort exclusions
Encounters are excluded from the cohort if any sepsis diagnosis codes are present on admission; this includes the encounter in the Sepsis Present on Admission with a Major Procedure Cohort. To apply additional filters, see Customize profiles.
Statistical Process Control (SPC) measures
NOTE: Because sepsis populations are not homogenous, they are not available in the SPC section of Scorecards.
