KB1043
Login screen does not display due to Remember Me token
Summary
After the Remember me login option has been used on a workstation, the login screen no longer displays. This can prevent other users from logging into Axiom Capital Tracking on the same workstation, or prevent the same user from logging in with a different user account.
Details
If an Axiom Capital Tracking system uses Windows Authentication or Axiom Prompt authentication, users have the option to click on Remember me when logging into the Axiom Desktop Client. This option stores a security token for the current user of the workstation in a user preferences file, so that the user is not prompted to log in the next time they start the Desktop Client.
Example login screen with Remember me enabled
Once the security token has been stored for the current Windows user, the Desktop Client application does not provide a way to log out or to force the login screen to display. This can cause issues in certain situations, for example:
-
A user allows someone else to log into Axiom Capital Tracking on their workstation (without changing Windows user accounts), and the other user accidentally enables "remember me". In this case, the other user's security token is now remembered on the original user's Windows account, preventing the original user from logging into Axiom Capital Tracking with their own account.
-
A System Administrator has multiple accounts (such as a Windows Authentication user account and an Axiom Prompt account), and they accidentally enable "remember me" for one of the accounts. In this case, the System Administrator now cannot log in using the other account.
In order to clear the token and display the login screen, you can delete the user preferences file on the local workstation.
Web Client
Although the Axiom Capital Tracking Web Client also has a "remember me" login option, the security token for the Web Client is stored separately from the security token for the Desktop Client. Deleting the user preferences file on the workstation does not clear the security token for the Web Client. However, the Web Client security token can be easily cleared by logging out of the Web Client.
Resolution
Deleting the AxiomUserSettings.xml
file on the workstation removes the stored security token, so that the Desktop Client login screen will display again. You do not need to be an administrator to delete the file that is stored under your Windows user name.
To delete the AxiomUserSettings file on your workstation:
-
Open Windows File Explorer: Start > File Explorer.
-
In the address bar, enter
C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Local\
. Replace<UserName>
with the appropriate user name.NOTE: This folder is hidden by default, but you can access it by typing the path to the folder. Alternatively, you can use the Windows environment variable (
%localappdata%
) to access the folder. -
Delete the
AxiomUserSettings.xml
file in this area. - Relaunch the Axiom Desktop Client.
Alternate resolutions
Alternatively, if you have access to the Axiom Capital Tracking add-in for Microsoft Word or PowerPoint, you can click the Log Out button on the Axiom ribbon menu in Word or PowerPoint. This will clear the stored security token for the Desktop Client.
Your Axiom administrator can also disable the "remember me" option for the system, by setting the system configuration setting ShowRememberMe to False. Keep in mind that if users have already used the "remember me" option, hiding the option will not clear any previously stored tokens. Users will continue to be remembered until they log out, or until the local AxiomUserSettings.xml
file is deleted.
Outcome
Once the AxiomUserSettings.xml
file is deleted for the current Windows user, the Axiom Capital Tracking login screen will once again display the next time the Desktop Client is started.
